• How the EU's new Urban Mobility framework, published by the European Commission in December 2020, and its Horizon Europe Mission, aim to achieve 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030.

• In December 2021 the European Commission presented its Efficient and Green Mobility package. As part of this, its Urban Mobility Framework states that “a clear priority should be placed at national and local level on the development of public transport, walking and cycling, as well as connected, shared mobility services”.
• This is the first time in history that the European Commission prioritises the investment in these modes as the backbone of urban mobility.
• This presentation will explore how this promising new framework can help both policy- and decision-makers to accelerate the development of cycling as a sustainable and healthy part of the mobility mix in Europe’s cities.

The City of Utrecht gives priority to the most sustainable, healthy and efficient modes of transport: walking & cycling, in combination with a lower priority to car mobility. This presentation will share the strategy of Utrecht on becoming a more people friendly city and how this transition is taking place. Shown by many examples of integrated bike facilities, infrastructure and public space and how this encourages the city to take the next step in creating bicycle-friendly urban developments. 

The H2020 AVENUE project (May 2018 - October 2022), designed and is currently deploying on-demand, door-to-door public transportation services with small fleets of fully automated minibuses in low to medium demand areas in 4 European demonstrator cities and 2 replicator cities. This presentation will discuss the lessons learned as well as the existing commercial and remaining legal obstacles for large scale commercial deployment.

Increased vehicle connectivity is a huge opportunity for both the automotive manufacturers and aftermarket service providers alike. The European Commission’s proposal for a Data Act paves the way for the users to enjoy their privacy rights and be in control of the data that they generate when using connected vehicles. The FIA Region I, a consumer body representing the interests of over 36 million motorists working to ensure safe, affordable, clean, and efficient mobility for all, argues, however, that the Data Act alone cannot deliver on its promises, and that sector-specific legislation on access to vehicle data is needed if we want users to fully embrace connectivity.

Look at any city. Heavy demand for mobility generates economic, environmental and social costs. New technology applications can enable or disrupt policies and plans. The sustainable handling of congestion, safety, climate and health impacts requires the best use of the tools available. What is urban mobility pricing, and when is it useful? Every city is unique, and times change, so how can innovative local strategies contribute to meeting global challenges?

In the region of Flanders, the Mobilidata-programme is currently rolled out: intelligent traffic light controllers and other innovative technological solutions are deployed to enable safer, more efficient, inclusive, and sustainable traffic. These technological solutions are co-created with citizens, policy makers, businesses, researchers and will be available for all road users, including those with specific needs. In this session, the benefits of applying a participatory approach when designing and developing new C-ITS solutions will be explained and main lessons learned and future opportunities will be shared with the audience.

Commercial road goods transport is a key component of efficient logistics chains and is often the only option for urban delivery. While the importance of urban logistics is expected to increase even further in the future, several important challenges remain. These include the current lack of alternative fuels infrastructure as well as introducing urban vehicle access restrictions that create barriers to cross-border and domestic transport services. In addition, data sharing will need to be closely examined further as questions remain on how data is accessed and shared among different stakeholders.

 

This presentation will look into how alternative fuels infrastructure, urban vehicle access restrictions, intelligent transport systems (ITS) and data sharing should be introduced and deployed in a coordinated, pragmatic and efficient manner to meet the objectives set out in the European Green Deal.

SmartwayZ.nl is a unique innovative mobility programme in the south of the Netherlands.  The aim of the programme is to improve accessibility and encourage innovation. During this presentation we will share several insights on how we are intending to regulate the use of an urban space and facilities in a digital environment. SmartwayZ.nl would like to work with municipalities and commercial service providers to get UVAR applications on the street in the next coming years.
