The Active Travel Award

This category recognises the best active travel schemes developed by local authorities and partners that form part of a well-designed public realm and create liveable neighbourhoods. Entries must focus on outstanding design and implementation of schemes in towns and cities that improve the places around them and contribute to improving health and climate action.

City of the Year

This category recognises a city that has achieved outstanding connected, seamless and easy-to-use multimodal and sustainable urban mobility though solutions enabled by combining transport policy and technology.

The AC Zap Clean Air - Awards Projects

This category recognises outstanding and innovative efforts to help make progress in achieving cleaner air in towns and cities through transformative actions to reduce carbon and GHG emissions through projects. Nominations must directly or indirectly reduce pollutant emissions, demonstrate innovation, offer sustainable outcomes, and provide a model for others to follow.

Clean Air Awards - Vehicles

This category recognises outstanding and innovative efforts to help make progress in achieving cleaner air in towns and cities through transformative actions to reduce carbon and GHG emissions through vehicles. Nominations must directly or indirectly reduce pollutant emissions, demonstrate innovation, offer sustainable outcomes, and provide a model for others to follow.

The Conduent Congestion Reduction Award 

Advances in technology have the potential to relieve congestion through encouraging people to eliminate or share journeys, reduce single car occupancy journeys or stagger their journey plans to avoid creating congestion. This category therefore recognises projects and products that reduce congestion through means such as: active traffic management, adaptive traffic lights, real-time traffic information, road pricing and parking management solutions.

The EV Charging Award 

This category recognises the work local authorities, regional councils and other public sector bodies have done to further the growth of electric vehicles by installing EV infrastructure. Nominations should include details of overall schemes of works, installations and any planning or overall strategy that underpins the body’s commitment to electric vehicles. Infrastructure projects should focus on the chargepoints and associated works, including network-related technologies to mitigate the impact of EVs, battery storage, on-site generation or a combination of those listed.


 

Urban Logistics Categories

The Fleet Innovation Award

This category is open to vehicle manufacturers and/or technology suppliers on behalf of a client fleet manager. Many industries rely on fleets, so fleet management is adapting to serve the sector’s needs better. This category will recognise the projects that have embraced digital data and cutting-edge technology to transform fleet management into a more agile, flexible, sustainable and safe operation.

The Future Projects Award

This category highlights the sustainable urban transport solutions of tomorrow and celebrates their potential for positive contribution to communities, neighbourhoods and urban landscapes. Open to local authorities and their partners (e.g. architects, developers, funders, contractors), nominations should include projects on the drawing board or at an early stage of construction that have a client associated to them. Entries in this category will involve a transport solution – mass transit hubs, metro and underground stations, pedestrian and travel-related projects – intended to transform and improve a large site, neighbourhood or urban quarter, where current and future inhabitants will enjoy a well-planned new or renewed environment. 

The Last-Mile Delivery Award

This category recognises the innovation in harnessing the power of mobility data and technology to enable the optimisation of routes, reduce cost of service and deliver a sustainable express solution whilst meeting the needs of the consumer. Nominations should showcase collaborations, technologies and policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions, with the ultimate goal of making businesses more sustainable and establishing strategic advantages over the competition. This award is open to home delivery and express delivery logistics operations in an urban environment.


 

Road User Categories

The Public Transport Award

This category recognises the successes of local authority public transport strategies in their specific regions. Nominations should include examples of the authority’s track record in managing public transport uptake and adoption, how the authority has engaged with both consumers and the sector, and any investments it has made into the space.

The Marston Holdings Road Safety Award

This category recognises outstanding achievements that improve road user safety through excellent practice, design and technical application. The award welcomes projects that can demonstrate the quantifiable effects of the project through measurement, monitoring or description. Road safety initiatives, schemes or products that contribute to casualty reduction are also welcomed for this award, particularly where they provide outputs that can be widely applied.

The Road User Charging Award

This category, in association with the Road User Charging Conference, recognises successful examples of different forms of road user charging in improving urban transport systems. Nominations should include examples of effective implementation, enforcement and public acceptance, as well as examples of car traffic reduction and subsequent reinvestment of revenues into public transit improvements and other multimodal transportation and urban infrastructure enhancements. Eligible forms of direct charges levied for the use of urban roads include point-based charges (for using a specific road or other infrastructure); distance-based charges; cordon/zone tolls (boundary-based fees, usually around a city centre with the charge levied for crossing a cordon/entering a zone); and area license-based pricing (a charge levied for driving within an area during a period of time).


 

Transport Categories

The Shared Mobility Award

This category is open to local authorities, transport operators and partners that are leveraging technology and innovation to manage multiple forms of transport in more efficient, resilient and sustainable ways, making best use of available capacity, ensuring continuous services despite disruptive incidents and encouraging the take-up of greener options. This award recognises innovation in the area of shared mobility, such as bike share, scooter hire, car clubs, contactless payments, developments in multimodal and integrated travel through, for example, a MaaS platform that can handle all transport choices and payments.

The Smart Parking Award

This category recognises intelligent approaches to the planning and management of parking, as well as advances in the systems used to manage parking. Nominations should include examples of ‘joined-up’ or lateral thinking that deliver solutions to on-street and off-street needs and examples of innovation – be it a piece of hardware, device or wider system – that makes the management of parking more efficient and/or customer-friendly.

The Transport Accessibility Award

This category includes projects or initiatives that can demonstrate improved access to urban transport services and networks for the elderly, people with disabilities or those with learning difficulties. Entries must highlight innovation, engagement and collaboration with impairment groups and other stakeholders, and the extent to which these have resulted in making transport in urban environments more inclusive for all users.

The Transport Planning Award

This category recognises the value of transport planning in achieving positive outcomes for the benefit of the public, in creating new communities or on reducing the adverse impact of transport on communities. Entries should also have a focus on climate action and be able to demonstrate this in the project. Entries can include initiatives that have contributed to the development of the transport planning profession or specific schemes and projects.

Transport Professional of the Year

This category recognises a person who has made an outstanding contribution to developing sustainable urban transportation. This will be awarded to a person who has shown awareness of and engagement with issues facing the sector and through their actions has delivered positive change for the profession and society.
